They are similar, especially in the shape, but then cupcakes are sweeter and generally have frosting on them. Muffins are more of a breakfast food--cupcakes more of a dessert--to me, at least.

Muffins are eaten for breakfast or snack, and usually do not have frosting, although they can also be sweet LOL!
